      What is the best portable air conditioner?
      It depends on the room, so pick the size first. On certified efficiency the leaders are Hisense HIAP0825TWD (8,000 BTU, 13.5 CEER), Midea MAP12S1TBL (10,000 BTU, 14.7 CEER), 12,000 BTU dual-hose inverter portable AC with heat, 14.2 CEER (12,000 BTU, 14.2 CEER). In every size, the dual-hose units lead the ranking.
      What does a 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner really cool?
      Less than the box says. The 14,000 BTU printed on many boxes is the older ASHRAE rating. The Department of Energy rating, SACC, is what the unit delivers: units sold as 14,000 BTU commonly certify between about 8,500 and 12,000 BTU, around 10,000 for many one-hose models and 12,000 for the best dual-hose ones. Size the room by SACC.
      How big a room does a portable air conditioner cool?
      Look at SACC, not the box. About 5,000 SACC cools 100-150 sq ft, 6,000 about 150-250 sq ft, 8,000 about 300-350 sq ft, 10,000 about 400-450 sq ft and 12,000 about 450-550 sq ft, in normal sun with two people. The size calculator adjusts for sun, people and a kitchen.
      Are dual-hose portable air conditioners better?
      On efficiency, yes. 14% of certified models have two hoses, and 14.7 CEER is the best dual-hose rating against a median of 7.3 for all models. A single-hose unit exhausts room air, which pulls warm air in from outside to replace it.
      How much does it cost to run a portable air conditioner?
      A typical certified unit (8,000 BTU SACC, 7.3 CEER) draws about 1096 watts and costs about $148 a year at 750 hours and the U.S. average of 18.0¢/kWh. The calculator works it out for your state.
      Does a portable air conditioner need a window?
      It needs a way to vent its hot air outside, through a window kit, a sliding-door kit, a hole in the wall or a vent. Every portable unit certified by the Department of Energy has one or two exhaust hoses. Products sold as hose-free are generally evaporative coolers, which are not air conditioners.
      Do portable air conditioners have to be drained?
      Most do not in normal weather: all but a few certified models evaporate the water and send it out through the exhaust hose. In very humid weather the pan can still fill, and a few models are made to drain by gravity or pump instead.
